Sparks earns yet another honor

Nevada once had the designation of being called “The Mississippi of the West.” Some years ago, Nevada was considered a pretty racist place, complete with the fact that Las Vegas Strip entertainers like Sammy Davis, Jr. were not allowed to stay in the hotels in which they played due to their skin color. It’s not exactly a proud thing for Nevada.
I’ve come to think of the term as less about race and more about redneck. Sometimes they’re one in the same, but not always. We certainly have a good number of rednecks here, but it’s not like other places don’t. It’s just that the term is around, so I still think of it on occasion.
Enter Sparks. I tend to think of Sparks as the redneck cousin to Reno. The Randy Quaid character in Christmas Vacation. Everything about it smack of less class and dignity.
We’ll call it the Mississippi of the Mississippi of the West. That’s appropriate, right?
This headline and accompanying story do nothing to help Sparks shed that reputation. I think it’s time we hold Sparks’ feet to the fire and demand that Sparks take its place among the outstanding communities throughout Nevada.
